The European Commission is developing a unified vehicle mileage database to combat fraud

The European Commission has launched an initiative to create a pan-European system for monitoring odometer readings in order to prevent mileage tampering in used cars.

This was reported on the European Commission’s official website. According to experts, between 30% and 50% of cars sold between EU countries have tampered odometer readings, causing billions in losses to buyers every year.

The new rules will require EU member states to record odometer readings not only during technical inspections but also at every service or repair visit. Manufacturers of modern connected vehicles will also automatically transmit these readings to national databases. This will allow buyers to check a vehicle’s full history regardless of how many countries it has been registered in previously.

The introduction of such a system is based on the successful experience of Belgium and the Netherlands, where similar registries have already helped minimize cases of fraud. Negotiations are currently underway between the EU Council and the European Parliament regarding the final text of the document. The new regulations are expected to take effect no earlier than 2029–2030, following their implementation into the national laws of all EU member states.

The Italian antitrust authority has launched an investigation into four leading electric vehicle manufacturers, including Tesla and Stellantis. The investigation was prompted by suspicions of unfair business practices.

Ford and Tesla have disclosed the distances their car owners have traveled using the BlueCruise and Full Self-Driving driver-assistance systems.
