Prada released Kolhapur-style sandals following a wave of criticism

The Italian brand Prada has unveiled a limited-edition collection of sandals inspired by traditional Indian kolhapuri footwear. The launch comes nearly a year after the company faced criticism over allegations of cultural appropriation.

This was reported by the BBC.

Prada stated that the sandals are crafted in India by artisans from the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka, where this footwear has its historical origins. According to media reports, the price per pair is approximately 750 euros.

Criticism of the brand arose last June after similar models were shown at a fashion show in Milan without any mention of their Indian origins. At the time, the company described them simply as “leather sandals,” but later acknowledged that the design has Indian roots.

The new collection is available in 40 Prada stores worldwide and online. Each pair is handmade. The company stated that the line “combines traditional techniques with contemporary design and premium materials,” creating “a dialogue between Indian heritage and modern luxury self-expression.”

At the same time, the brand announced the launch of a three-year training program for artisans from eight regions of India where Kolhapuris are made. The program was developed in collaboration with two Indian design institutes. It involves training 180 artisans through six-month modules. Some participants will have the opportunity to continue their studies at the Prada Academy in Italy.

Prada noted that the initiative aims to support artisans, develop their skills, and preserve traditional knowledge, as well as help local communities continue the craft.

Kolhapur sandals, named after the city of Kolhapur in the state of Maharashtra, have been known since the 12th century. They are made of leather, often using natural dyes suitable for the hot climate.

In 2019, the Indian government granted this type of footwear Geographical Indication status, which certifies its origin and authenticity. In the local market, such sandals typically cost between 500 and 1,000 rupees (about $5–$10), which is significantly cheaper than Prada’s luxury models.

Traditional kolhapuri, like many other Indian handicrafts, have long been the subject of debate regarding the use of cultural heritage by international brands. Experts point out that artisans do not always receive the recognition and compensation they deserve.
