The UN Secretary-General expressed deep concern over Russia's plans to attack Kyiv

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep concern over official statements by the Russian Federation regarding plans to launch strikes against Ukrainian defense facilities and decision-making centers in Kyiv.

This was reported by the Reuters news agency.

The head of the United Nations made the statement on Tuesday during a meeting of the UN Security Council. António Guterres noted that the Kremlin announced these intentions following reports of a drone attack on a college building and dormitory in Starobilsk, Luhansk Oblast, which is temporarily under Russian control.

“We condemned the attack on the school, just as we condemn all attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, wherever they occur,” the UN Secretary-General emphasized.

He also stressed that any further aggressive steps would only complicate the process of a future diplomatic settlement and inevitably increase the number of civilian casualties. According to Guterres, now more than ever, it is crucial to avoid any escalation of the conflict, which has already inflicted devastating losses on people and risks making the search for peace even more distant.

Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of the aggressor country, the Russian Federation, stated during a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Russia is “launching strikes on targets in Kyiv.”
