Belgian Foreign Minister criticizes President Trump’s UN speech — Anadolu Agency

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot criticized US President Donald Trump’s annual address to the UN General Assembly in New York, United States. According to the Belgian diplomat, the speech was primarily devoted to domestic US policy rather than international issues, Anadolu Agency reports.

Assessment of Trump’s speech

Prévot told Belga that, in his view, Trump confused the nature of the meeting, as he mostly praised his own domestic policy. He also linked the speech’s emphasis to the US midterm elections due to take place on November 3, noting that the president would seek to present his political vision ahead of the vote.

The head of Belgian diplomacy also criticized Trump’s positions on climate change, migration and international judicial institutions designed to combat impunity for war crimes and crimes against humanity. According to Prévot, the US president’s views on these issues are diametrically opposed to Belgium’s.

International law and the UN’s role

In a comment to Belgian broadcaster VRT, Prévot stressed that international law is of particular importance to Belgium, as the country is not a military or financial power. He added that it is not enough merely to establish international rules — they must be enforced, and major powers must not simultaneously be violators and those ensuring compliance with the norms.

Prévot also expressed doubts about the UN’s current strength, particularly because of difficulties in making decisions in the Security Council. In his view, the appointment of a successor to the current UN secretary-general will be particularly important for strengthening the organization’s role. The next UN secretary-general is to begin work on January 1, 2027.
