The Slovak Foreign Minister condemned Russia's recent massive attacks on Ukraine

Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár issued an official statement condemning the Russian Federation’s massive airstrikes on Ukrainian territory that took place on May 13 and 14.

Bratislava was particularly concerned by the fact that enemy missiles and drones reached Uzhhorod, located directly near the Slovak border.

The head of the Slovak Foreign Ministry emphasized that a large Slovak minority lives in the Zakarpattia region, whose safety has been threatened by the actions of the Russian army.

This condemnation was a significant step, as the Slovak opposition had previously repeatedly criticized the current government for avoiding direct criticism of the Kremlin’s aggressive actions.

“Slovakia condemns yesterday’s and today’s massive airstrikes by the Russian Federation on Ukrainian territory, which have even reached Uzhhorod in the Zakarpattia region near the border with the Slovak Republic,” Juraj Blanár stated.

At the same time, the Slovak minister’s rhetoric remained consistent with the current government’s specific position.

Blanár expressed regret that the attacks occurred after brief periods of calm, which, in his view, could have served as a foundation for “de-escalating tensions” and resuming peace talks between the parties.

It is noteworthy that in his statement, the minister resorted to the tactic of equating the parties, without making a clear distinction between the aggressor and the country under attack.

Juraj Blanár made it clear that the Slovak government also does not support Ukrainian retaliatory strikes on territories within the Russian Federation.

According to the Slovak diplomat, any attacks on civilian areas or critical infrastructure—regardless of where they occur—only push the prospect of peaceful dialogue further away.

He emphasized that the escalation of hostilities significantly limits the possibilities for achieving “a lasting and just peace.”

“Further attacks on civilian areas and critical infrastructure, both in Ukraine and Russia, do not contribute to the peace process,” the minister concluded.
