During a visit to the U.S. military base at Guantanamo, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hagset stated that Cuba should not attempt to acquire weapons capable of threatening U.S. territory or the base itself.
According to him, any attempts by Havana to acquire such weapons could lead to a confrontation that the Cuban authorities would be unable to handle.
“It would be unwise for the Cuban government to try to acquire or gain access to weapons that could reach this base or our American homeland,” Hagseth said.
The Pentagon chief also emphasized that no country in the world can match the military capabilities of the United States.
The U.S. base at Guantanamo is located in southeastern Cuba and remains the only U.S. military base on the territory of another country, which Washington leases indefinitely. Cuban authorities have repeatedly demanded the return of this territory.
