Archbishop Elia, Primate of the Finnish Orthodox Church, expressed outrage at the statements made by Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, who justifies and blesses nuclear weapons using Christian rhetoric.
The head of the Finnish Orthodox Church emphasized that during the Orthodox liturgy, believers pray for peace throughout the world, not for the military victory of any single state, stressing that there is no such thing as “Orthodox nuclear weapons.”
The Finnish archbishop was particularly outraged by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church’s attempts to link the creation of the Soviet atomic bomb to “God’s grace” and the intercession of St. Seraphim of Sarov. The head of the Finnish Orthodox Church noted that Seraphim of Sarov was the embodiment of love, forgiveness, and humility—a stance that is the exact opposite of that held by the current head of the Moscow Patriarchate, who openly supports Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine.
