Germany admits phasing out nuclear energy was a major mistake

Germany’s Energy Minister, Katharina Reiche, has acknowledged that the phased abandonment of nuclear power was a "huge mistake." Currently, the country lacks sufficient energy from that source, making gas the only viable supply option.

For 40 years, Germany fought against nuclear power and spent 20 years dismantling it. However, just a week after the last nuclear power plant's cooling tower exploded, the government realised this had been a strategic error, highlighting serious challenges in its energy policy.

Europe now faces the need to inject a record amount of gas from April to October to fill storage capacity to 90%. Yet, this target appears unlikely to be met. Even reaching 80% storage levels will require significant gas purchases.

Germany's broader energy strategy has faced significant disruption as nuclear power had been a cornerstone of its energy mix. This situation underscores the current dependence on gas and the urgent need to diversify energy sources.

In conclusion, both Germany and the wider European region must seek new solutions to meet their energy demands, learning from the shortcomings of past decisions and advancing alternative energy development.

Most likely, the coming years will see a revival of investments in nuclear energy alongside intensified efforts to find more stable and diverse energy sources.
