Shinsegae chairman takes part in Foundry School launch in the US
Chung Yong-jin, chairman of South Korea's Shinsegae Group, took part in the launch of the US government-backed Foundry School program in Washington. US Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and executives from technology and semiconductor companies also attended the event.
As The Korea Herald reports, Chung attended the program's launch at the invitation of Vance and the US Department of State. The State Department runs Foundry School in cooperation with Stanford University to train entrepreneurs, engineers, and other specialists needed for the development of advanced manufacturing and strategic industries.
Data center project in Korea
US Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg called Shinsegae's partnership with US startup Reflection AI an important milestone in South Korea-US cooperation in advanced industries. He also described Chung as an important partner in building reliable artificial intelligence supply chains among allies.
Reflection AI CEO and co-founder Misha Laskin said during a panel discussion that his company's cooperation with Shinsegae demonstrates the partnership between South Korea and the United States. In March, the companies signed a partnership agreement on a large-scale artificial intelligence data center project in South Korea. They are working to establish a joint venture and select a site for the facility.

According to The Korea Herald, the project has drawn attention as the first initiative under a US State Department program intended to promote the global spread of reliable artificial intelligence technologies.
Pax Silica initiative
During meetings with Laskin and other participants, including Vance, Rubio, Helberg, and Meta president Dina Powell McCormick, Chung stressed the importance of closer cooperation between South Korea and the United States for the success of Pax Silica. This is a US-led economic security framework initiative aimed at strengthening supply chains for semiconductors, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, and energy among allies.
Chung said that joining the efforts of South Korea and the United States could create greater synergy, and also emphasized the importance of developing specialists for advanced industries, including artificial intelligence.
