Pakistan’s chief justice outlines judicial reforms — Dawn
Pakistan’s Chief Justice Yahya Afridi briefed a delegation from the National Defence University in Islamabad on the principles of parliamentary democracy, constitutional governance and justice-sector reforms. The meeting took place at the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Dawn reports.
Defence university delegation
The delegation included 123 participants in the National Security and War Course 2027. It was led by Chief Instructor Major General Mohammad Shahzad Khan.
Participants included faculty members and representatives of Pakistan’s Armed Forces and civil service, as well as 27 participants from friendly countries. Afridi explained the constitutional principle of separation of powers and the complementary roles of the legislative, executive and judicial branches in ensuring the rule of law. He also spoke about the hierarchy of courts and the limits of jurisdiction of different court instances.

Access to justice
The chief justice separately focused on the work of the National Judicial Policy Making Committee, which he described as the highest judicial policy forum. He informed the delegation about measures to improve judicial infrastructure, citizen services and access to justice.
In addition, Afridi presented the Gender-Sensitive Justice Initiative for 2026–2027. It provides for the operation of women’s support centers, where women involved in court proceedings can receive necessary services in one place.
