Greenland has issued a warning to an American oil company over equipment on the coast
Greenland’s Mineral Resources Authority issued a warning to the U.S. oil company Greenland Energy after it delivered exploration drilling equipment to shore at a remote site on the island’s east coast without prior approval.
In a statement dated July 30, the Greenlandic authorities emphasized that all future logistical operations must be reported to the Mineral Resources Authority and approved by it before being carried out. Greenland Energy—a Texas-based oil company founded last year—plans to conduct exploration in the Jameson Land area in eastern Greenland.
The company has stated that this region may contain oil reserves worth up to $1 trillion. It also announced its intention to spend $60 million on drilling two exploratory wells. According to France 24 English, actual drilling has not yet begun.

Lucas Waden, an associate researcher in the Russia Program at George Washington University, told France 24 that the political controversy was not caused by the oil exploration itself, but by a lack of coordination with the Greenlandic authorities during the unloading of equipment.
The situation is unfolding against the backdrop of tense relations surrounding Greenland. In January, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the United States should gain control of the island, did not rule out the use of force, and threatened to impose tariffs on European countries that opposed this. Following this, Denmark, Greenland, and the U.S. established a working group to explore the framework for future relations.
Mikaa Bloujeon-Mered, an expert on Greenland, believes that the lack of a drilling permit could lead to a standoff between the company and the island’s authorities. He also drew attention to a July interview with Trump, in which the U.S. president predicted that Greenland would come under Washington’s control before the end of his term.
