Greece is investing €4 billion in the development of the "Achilles Shield" air defense system — Ekathimerini
The Greek National Security Council (KYSEA) has officially approved the implementation of strategic defense projects aimed at radically modernizing the national armed forces.
This was reported by Ekathimerini.
A key decision was the approval of the purchase of a multi-layered air defense system and anti-drone defenses worth 3 billion euros.
As part of this large-scale modernization, the government has also allocated funds to upgrade 38 F-16 fighter jets.
Defense Minister Nikos Dendias confirmed that the total cost of the two main programs, previously approved by a parliamentary committee, amounts to approximately 4 billion euros.
The main element of the new security architecture will be an integrated defense system symbolically named “Achilles Shield.”
This system is designed to create an impenetrable dome over the country’s territory, ensuring the interception of both ballistic targets and modern drones.
Athens is currently engaged in intensive negotiations with Israel regarding the supply of technological solutions and missile components for this system.
“KYSEA has also approved the modernization of four MEKO 200 frigates and a maintenance agreement for C29J military transport aircraft,” noted the head of the defense ministry.
As a reminder, the Greek government will allocate €300 million in subsidies to address the energy crisis.
Greece will also deploy Patriot and F-16 systems to protect Bulgaria from potential attacks by Iran.
