Greece plans to join the restoration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
Greece is ready to consider the possibility of providing financial support for the restoration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, which was damaged as a result of the Russian attack. This was stated by the Greek Ambassador to Ukraine, Pantelis Alexandros Dimitrakopoulos, during an online meeting with Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy and Minister of Culture Tetiana Berezhna.
First Deputy Minister of Culture Ivan Verbytskyi also participated in the meeting.
Tetyana Berezhna thanked Greece for its consistent support of Ukraine and for joining the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Fund during the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC2026).
In turn, Pantelis Alexandros Dimitrakopoulos reaffirmed Athens’ readiness to continue supporting Ukraine both through the implementation of bilateral projects and through contributions to the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Fund.
During the meeting, special attention was given to the restoration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra following the Russian attack on June 15.
According to Berezhna, emergency work to protect the damaged monument has already been completed.
The next stage will involve conservation work, after which preparations will begin for the scientific and design documentation required for a full-scale restoration.
Ivan Verbytskyi reported that Ukrainian and international experts have already been involved in assessing the technical condition of the monument.
In particular, UNESCO has provided advisory support, and its specialists have conducted an initial 3D scan of the site, which will serve as the basis for further research and restoration work.
In addition, cooperation is ongoing with international restoration experts who are helping to prepare recommendations for the conservation and subsequent restoration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
The Greek ambassador confirmed his country’s readiness to consider financial participation in the restoration of the shrine and proposed maintaining constant coordination with the Ukrainian side to identify priority needs and the optimal format for future assistance.
Ukraine, together with Switzerland, has agreed to begin urgent restoration work on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra following the Russian attack. The focus is currently on the Cathedral of the Dormition, which sustained damage and requires urgent protection from further destruction.
