Greece to ban social media access for children under 15 from 2027
Starting in 2027, Greece will prohibit children under 15 from accessing social media platforms. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis justified the ban by citing the harmful effects of screen time and the pressure of online environments on young users.
Previously, the country banned mobile phones in schools and launched a parental control platform aimed at overseeing children’s online activities. These initiatives are designed to mitigate the negative impact of digital technologies and safeguard children’s mental health.
The social media restriction for younger teens is part of broader governmental efforts to limit screen time and prevent cyberbullying and other online dangers.
The Greek government intends these measures to foster a healthy digital culture among youth, focusing on their safety and development in the real world rather than online.
This decision has sparked lively debate and may influence legislative approaches in other countries seeking to protect their children in the digital age.
