Greece has appealed to the EU over the actions of Turkish fishermen in the Aegean Sea

Greece has appealed to the EU over the actions of Turkish fishermen in the Aegean Sea

On Friday, May 14, Greece officially appealed to the European Union to intervene in the situation in the eastern Aegean Sea. Athens has reported violations of maritime law and “illegal fishing” by Turkish fishermen and is calling on the EU to take measures to resolve the situation.

Reuters reports on this.

Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs Vasilis Kikilias raised the issue during a meeting with European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Kostas Kadis on Friday, May 15, in Athens.

"I raised with the Commissioner an issue of importance to Greece regarding our fishermen and fishing, as well as the provocative behavior of our Turkish neighbors in connection with illegal fishing, non-compliance with maritime law, and the denial of our sovereign rights," he said.

Kikilias emphasized that Greece is asking the European Union to intervene. In this context, he stressed that Greece’s maritime borders are also Europe’s borders.

As noted, Greece has designated restricted fishing zones in the Aegean Sea, some of which Turkey has contested as falling outside the country’s jurisdiction. Last year, Athens protested against Turkey’s maritime spatial plan, which defined zones for fishing and other activities in the Aegean Sea.

Greece is demanding an explanation from Ukraineregarding a maritime drone near Lefkada.

The Ukrainian company Uforce, which develops marine drones, has officially denied any involvement with the device found in the Ionian Sea.

Greece has claimed the marine drone near Lefkada is of “Ukrainian origin”

A conflict is brewing between Ukraine and Greece over marine drones.
