Ghanaian citizens in South Africa ask to resume evacuation — MyJoyOnline
Ghanaian citizens who remain in the Republic of South Africa have appealed to their country’s authorities to resume voluntary evacuation. They say they want to return home after losing their jobs, businesses and housing amid new xenophobic attacks, MyJoyOnline reports.
Evacuation ended on September 4
The Ghanaian government ended the evacuation program after the last group of 41 people arrived in the country on September 4. The total number of Ghanaian citizens evacuated from South Africa reached 1,964.
Some of those who remained in South Africa say their circumstances continue to worsen, so they are asking to be given another opportunity to return to Ghana.

Margaret Amenyovegbe’s statement
One of the Ghanaian citizens, Margaret Amenyovegbe, said that she and others initially registered for evacuation but did not attend the subsequent screening. According to her, they were discouraged from completing the procedure by reports of overcrowding and inadequate accommodation at evacuation centers.
Amenyovegbe said that four adults and four children in her immediate group want to return to Ghana. She lived in South Africa for 14 years and worked as a hairdresser, but was forced to stop working due to difficulties related to immigration issues. According to her, the situation is particularly difficult for Ghanaians without valid work permits.
