Ebonyi governor dismisses works commissioner — Premium Times Nigeria

Francis Nwifuru, governor of Nigeria’s Ebonyi State, has dismissed the state Commissioner for Works, Stanley Mbam. According to Premium Times Nigeria, the decision was announced on September 19 in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Monday Uzor.

Handover of duties

Nwifuru ordered Mbam to immediately hand over to the Secretary to the State Government all government property in his possession, including his official vehicle. The former commissioner must also transfer his duties to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works.

The statement did not specify the reason for the dismissal. However, it noted that the governor’s administration is focused on effective governance and improving the state’s public infrastructure.

Previous disciplinary measures

This is the third disciplinary measure against Mbam during his tenure as Commissioner for Works under Governor Nwifuru. On July 28, 2025, he and about 85 officials were suspended over their alleged absence from an important government event. About a week later, the officials were reinstated.

On February 28, 2026, Mbam was suspended indefinitely for the second time, along with the Commissioner for Infrastructure Development for Concessions, Ogbonnaya Abara. At the time, the governor cited alleged failure to perform official duties, slow project implementation, and shortcomings in the work of the Ministry of Works. Three days later, Mbam publicly apologized and appealed to the governor to give him another opportunity to work.

On May 3, 2026, Nwifuru reinstated Mbam and other suspended officials during a Father’s Day service at the Government House Chapel in Abakaliki. Mbam subsequently resumed his position as Commissioner for Works. State authorities have not yet announced the appointment of his successor.
