Author publishes self-help spell book in Cyprus — Cyprus Mail

In Cyprus, an author using the pseudonym Dorothy Howls has published the book The Magic We Create: The Book of Spells. In it, she describes exercises presented as rituals for overcoming stress, recovering from exhaustion and supporting mental health. As Cyprus Mail reports, the 43-year-old author says that a doctor of psychology reviewed the book before publication and that its practices are based on methods used by therapists.

Rituals without the supernatural

The author calls the exercises “spells,” although she does not consider them a manifestation of the supernatural. In her view, “magic” lies in a person’s ability to change their way of thinking and use neuroplasticity. She compares repeating the ritual texts to prayers, but emphasizes that she does not expect an external force to solve a person’s problems.

Each practice in the book is presented over two pages. One contains a rhyming text to recite, while the other provides the purpose of the exercise, instructions and an explanation related to techniques used in therapy. For example, The Bend and Breathe is offered in the book for moments of tension or burnout: the reader is advised to stand straight, gently sway from side to side like a tree in the wind, and combine the movement with breathing.

The author’s experience and that of her friend

Dorothy Howls previously worked as a creative director in advertising and is now on a creative break that has lasted about a year and a half. During this time, she made a short film, trained artificial intelligence models and wrote a book. The author says she aims to create works that support mental health.

Her friend Kat Antoniou, a 36-year-old accountant originally from Moldova who grew up in Cyprus, is interested in reiki, crystal therapy, tarot, shamanism and other spiritual practices. At the same time, she shares the view that a person does not necessarily need to turn to intermediaries to find an answer: sometimes it is worth stopping, breathing and listening to oneself.

The author also acknowledges that part of the effect of such actions may be explained by a placebo. According to her, an object to which a person assigns special significance does not have supernatural properties, but positive associations with it may help cope with stress.
