Ghana’s parliamentary minority demands sanitation fund — MyJoyOnline
Ghana’s parliamentary minority has called for the creation of a dedicated sanitation fund to ensure stable financing for waste collection, waste processing and other sanitation services at the municipal and district levels. In its assessment, local authorities lack sufficient funding even for basic garbage collection, MyJoyOnline reports.
Lack of funding
Ralph Poku-Adusei, a deputy member of the parliamentary minority on the Sanitation and Water Resources Committee, said that the financial difficulties of local authorities are weakening efforts to address the sanitation crisis. He cited the example of a municipality with eight sanitation workers and questioned their ability to cover the entire area.
Poku-Adusei also expressed concern over the lack of permanent contracts with waste management companies in some districts and municipalities. In his view, this hinders sustained efforts to improve sanitation conditions.

Waste processing
The parliamentary minority representative believes that Ghana should move from basic waste collection and disposal to systems that turn waste into useful resources. He mentioned countries where waste is used to generate electricity through biogas and other technologies.
In his assessment, difficulties with garbage collection, landfill management and open defecation indicate that the country has not yet reached the necessary level of sanitation infrastructure development. The parliamentary Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources is currently assessing waste management facilities and processes in the country.
