NATO Acknowledges Ukraine's Advantages in Certain Aspects of the War — Business Insider
The Ukrainian Armed Forces are operating at a pace that NATO armies are currently struggling to keep up with. According to media reports, this primarily concerns procurement, military training, and weapons development.
According to journalists, they spoke with Alliance soldiers who are involved in training Ukrainian troops in Poland. All of these activities are taking place at Camp Jomsborg.
Ukrainian soldiers are sharing practical lessons learned directly on the front lines with representatives of NATO armies.
Major John, who coordinates the training process, stated that one of the main differences between Ukraine and Western armies lies in the speed of operations.
According to him, Kyiv needs training and the necessary equipment as quickly as possible, whereas Western military structures primarily operate according to long-term plans.
“The West is accustomed to long-term planning horizons. Ukraine needs results here and now,” John explained.
The exercise commander, Norwegian Brigadier General Atle Molde, also commented on this issue. He emphasized that the difference in pace extends beyond military training.
Molde noted that peacetime regulations governing the procurement and modernization of weapons create daily challenges for the Norwegian Army. In Ukraine, however, changes to weapons and approaches can be implemented much more quickly, directly in the midst of combat operations.
The general pointed out that one example is drones. In Western armies, the upgrade process can take months, whereas Ukrainian engineers, working near the front lines, are able to update software every few days or weeks, based on the military’s current needs.
Ukraine’s experience is prompting Western allies to rethink their own approaches to bureaucratic procedures, risks, and cooperation with the defense industry.
At the same time, representatives of Western armies acknowledge that Ukraine’s ability to act more quickly is largely due to the conditions of war, which create a sense of urgency characteristic of armies engaged in combat operations.
