Enugu Governor Mbah receives honorary doctorate from the University of East London
In the United Kingdom, the University of East London awarded Peter Mbah, governor of Nigeria’s Enugu State, an honorary Doctor of Laws degree honoris causa. The award was presented during a graduation ceremony at the Docklands campus in London.
As Premium Times Nigeria reports, the address at the ceremony was delivered by Professor Fatima Annan-Diab, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Business and Executive Dean of the Royal Docks School of Business and Law. She recalled Mbah’s academic and leadership achievements at the university, as well as his subsequent career as an entrepreneur and politician.
Education and career
According to Annan-Diab, more than two decades ago Mbah studied law at the University of East London. He led the student law society, represented students on the Students’ Representative Council and the School of Law board, won an internal moot court competition, and represented the university at the International Negotiation Competition.

The university also noted that Mbah earned a master’s degree in maritime and commercial law from Lagos State University, an MBA from Spain’s IESE Business School, studied at Lagos Business School, and completed postgraduate studies in strategy and innovation at the University of Oxford. He founded Pinnacle Oil and Gas and also served as chief of staff and commissioner for finance and economic development of Enugu State.
Statements on education
Peter Mbah took office as governor of Enugu in May 2023. In its citation, the university noted his administration’s investments in education and youth skills development.
In his speech after receiving the degree, Mbah said that he believes in disruptive innovation, the power of education, service, and the aspiration to rise above inherited circumstances. He also said that the state allocates 33% of its budget to education, is building schools and technology hubs, and is creating opportunities for young people in an economy increasingly based on knowledge, innovation, and technology.
