Ghana plans 20% allowance for educators and healthcare workers in underserved districts
Ghanaian President John Mahama said the government is developing a policy for a 20% allowance on the base salary of education and healthcare workers who agree to work in underserved and under-serviced districts. He said this during a trip to the Upper West Region, reports MyJoyOnline.
Conditions for introducing the allowance
According to Mahama, the authorities are identifying such districts, while the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has been tasked with developing a mechanism for implementing the initiative. The allowance is intended to encourage specialists to accept postings to areas where their services are most needed.
The president noted that the process has already begun. Payments are to be introduced after the necessary procedures are completed and relevant arrangements are approved. Education and healthcare workers who accept such postings will receive an additional 20% of their base salary.

Conditions in communities
Mahama also called on communities to support workers assigned to such areas, including by sharing food with them. According to him, the government is simultaneously working to improve conditions in every district, including roads, water supply and electricity supply.
The president added that healthcare and educational institutions will be provided with equipment needed for work and improving service delivery.
