Japan to ease export restrictions on lethal weapons, according to the NYT

The Japanese government, led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, has decided to lift some restrictions on the export of lethal weapons to other countries. The move is attributed to the deteriorating security situation in the Asia-Pacific region and changes in the international policies of Japan’s allies.

This was reported by The New York Times.

According to the head of the Japanese government, the current security environment has become too complex for any single country to guarantee its own defense.

“No country can now protect its own peace and security on its own,” Takaichi noted.

Tokyo is also drawing attention to growing challenges from China, Russia, and North Korea, as well as the unpredictability of U.S. policy, given that the United States is Japan’s key ally.

According to sources, the new rules significantly expand the capabilities of Japan’s defense sector. Companies will now be able to supply weapons to up to 17 partner countries. Potential areas of cooperation include supplying frigates to the Philippines, submarines to Indonesia, as well as air defense systems and high-tech equipment.

At the same time, restrictions on arms exports to countries where active hostilities are ongoing remain in place. Exceptions are possible only in cases where there is a direct threat to Japan’s national security.

Despite the changes, the government emphasizes that the country is not deviating from its pacifist doctrine.

“There is absolutely no change in our commitment to the path and fundamental principles we have adhered to as a peaceful nation for over 80 years since the war,” the prime minister stated.

The decision is also aimed at supporting Japan’s defense-industrial complex and expanding military cooperation with allies amid growing global demand for weapons.

Earlier reports indicated that Japan’s first destroyer, the JS Chokai, equipped with American Tomahawk cruise missiles, is preparing to begin combat trials.

Japan also downgraded its assessment of relations with China in a new diplomatic report. The reason is tensions surrounding Taiwan and political statements from both sides. At the same time, Tokyo states that it wants to maintain dialogue with Beijing.
