Foreign residents of Germany concerned after AfD success in Saxony-Anhalt
Foreign residents of Germany reacted differently to the election result in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, where Alternative for Germany (AfD) won nearly 44% of the vote. The party fell three seats short of an absolute majority. Some readers expressed concerns about discrimination, safety and their future in the country.
As The Local Germany reports, just over 60% of readers who shared their reactions after the results were announced said they were concerned or very concerned. At the same time, nearly 40% said they were not worried, with some of them viewing the AfD result positively.
Concerns about racism and the future
Some participants in the reader survey said they feared an increase in racism and discrimination against people of different backgrounds in everyday life. Readers from Bangladesh, India, Portugal, Egypt, Romania and other countries spoke of concern for their families' safety, residence and citizenship status, as well as their children's future in Germany.

Some respondents said the election outcome had prompted them to reconsider their long-term plans for living in the country. Some are considering leaving Germany, while others expressed concern about the 2029 federal election.
AfD's status in Saxony-Anhalt
The AfD state branch in Saxony-Anhalt is classified as extremist by Germany's domestic intelligence service. The party's proposals on citizenship and “remigration” have raised concerns among some immigrants, including those who have lived in Germany for a long time or already hold German citizenship.
At the same time, AfD supporters among the respondents emphasized the distinction between legal and illegal immigration. They believed that stricter migration policy would not affect people who work, integrate and obey the law.
