Iran may have used Russian satellite data to attack US base in Saudi Arabia

Iranian drone and missile strikes on US bases in Saudi Arabia during Operation Epic Fury may have been carried out with the assistance of Russian reconnaissance satellites. This was reported by The Jerusalem Post, citing CNN, which quoted two US officials.

Data before the attack

According to CNN, Russian satellites may have transmitted information to Tehran after flying over areas where US military personnel were stationed. These facilities included Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, which Iran attacked on March 27.

As CNN notes, Russia's satellite capabilities may have played an important role in the strike on this base. Twelve US servicemembers were injured in the attack.

Targets of the strikes

CNN analyzed satellite tracking data and reported that they flew over the target areas shortly before the Iranian operations. The satellites were capable of taking detailed images, detecting radio signals, conducting infrared surveillance, and synthetic aperture radar imaging. Such technologies can be used to identify important targets.

According to CNN, one of the targets was a US Air Force AWACS early warning and control aircraft destroyed during the attack on Prince Sultan Air Base. The TV channel called the precision of the strikes evidence of Iran's possible use of Russian satellite data. Other facilities mentioned in the report included a CIA facility at the US Embassy compound in Riyadh.

Saudi expert Nawaf Obaid told CNN that Moscow's assistance to Tehran could be explained by US support for Ukraine in strikes on Russian targets. He called it Russian retaliation and noted that such assistance could have significant consequences for the region's security architecture.
