Iran explains why it wants to charge ships in the Strait of Hormuz — CNN

Iran has stated that it does not plan to impose tariffs or transit fees for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, but intends to charge fees for services that ensure safe navigation in the region.

This was announced by Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi.

According to him, this involves compensation for navigational support, search and rescue operations, security measures, and environmental protection in cases of pollution. These services, as noted, will be provided by Iran in cooperation with Oman.

Gharibabadi emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz is located in the territorial waters of Iran and Oman, and therefore both countries have corresponding rights under international maritime law.

At the same time, the Iranian diplomat acknowledged that the proposed mechanism could cause dissatisfaction among certain states, though he assured that it would comply with international standards.

Separately, Garibabadi reported progress in negotiations between Iran and the U.S. According to him, the parties have made “significant progress” in drafting a peace agreement, but there is currently no specific timeline for its possible signing.

Earlier, Iran launched a missile strike on the Ali Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait, where U.S. military personnel and contractors were stationed. The attack resulted in minor injuries among personnel and damage to U.S. drones. The incident occurred amid U.S. efforts to negotiate an extension of the ceasefire with Tehran.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is alive and continues to interact with those around him, although he does so cautiously and primarily through written messages and intermediaries. Officials in Washington note that his activity has been increasing recently.
