Iran is allowing ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz for a fee: a Chinese ship has passed through the strait for the first time

Iran has allowed the Chinese cargo ship Newvoyager, flying the Panamanian flag, to pass through the blocked Strait of Hormuz for a fee.

This was reported by Lloyd’s List.

The transit was arranged by a Chinese maritime brokerage firm, which made the payment to Iran. The amount and payment method have not been disclosed.

The ship passed through the Iranian corridor near Larak Island—a route that requires a separate permit and payment.

According to the publication, more than 20 vessels have already used this route, mostly Greek, as well as Indian, Pakistani, Syrian, and Iranian.

Iran reviews each request individually, though certain countries, notably India, may negotiate blanket permits.

Meanwhile, major shipping companies, including Cosco Shipping, are currently avoiding passage through the Strait of Hormuz, awaiting intergovernmental agreements.
