Iran says US fulfillment of obligations could ease tensions — Dawn
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that the United States fulfilling its obligations under the Islamabad Memorandum could ease regional tensions. He said this during a phone call with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, Dawn reports.
According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Araghchi placed responsibility for the current tensions on Washington, citing the United States’ failure to fulfill its obligations under the memorandum. In his view, compliance with these agreements could help restore normal conditions.
Talks on the Strait of Hormuz
Araghchi also informed his Japanese counterpart about consultations between Iran and Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, the sides have made significant progress in establishing a temporary transit route through the strategic waterway. Consultations on mechanisms for managing this route will continue.
Motegi expressed deep concern over the resumption of attacks between the United States and Iran, called for rapid de-escalation and a return to negotiations. He urged Tehran to show maximum flexibility and restraint, particularly regarding attacks on civilian vessels. Japan also advocated for restoring free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz without additional costs.

The Islamabad Memorandum was signed in June through the mediation of Pakistan and Qatar. The document set out a framework for ending hostilities and negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
Tehran’s warning
Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Mohsen Rezaei said that the continuation of the US economic war could lead to the introduction of a maritime exclusion zone in the Persian Gulf. He also claimed that Iran had revised its operational approach toward US warships and bases.
US President Donald Trump, for his part, said that Iran would not obtain nuclear weapons and called the US naval blockade of Iran powerful and effective. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said he intended to continue resistance until the aggressors feel complete regret.
Separately, Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported that the Iranian Navy had seized a US Navy unmanned underwater vehicle at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian media also reported a US missile strike on a small Iranian tanker near Kharg Island.
