Italian authorities have issued yellow weather warnings in parts of 12 regions due to severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and gusty winds. The bad weather has affected northern and central parts of the country, with flooding reported in Florence.

Warnings in 12 regions

As Anadolu Agency reports, the Department of Civil Protection issued yellow warnings for parts of Abruzzo, Basilicata, Lazio, Campania, Lombardy, Marche, Molise, Puglia, Sardinia, Sicily, Umbria and Tuscany.

An Atlantic weather system moving across Central Europe brought intense thunderstorms to northern and central Italy. Heavy precipitation also affected or was forecast for Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Tuscany and Campania.

Downpour in Florence

Florence experienced a particularly heavy downpour, which local media called a “water bomb.” Water entered the Uffizi Gallery and splashed the outer glass of the protective case containing Caravaggio’s painting “Bacchus.” No damage to the artwork itself was reported.

The day before, an orange weather alert was in effect across much of Liguria and in certain areas of Emilia-Romagna. Yellow warnings were also introduced in other regions of the country.
