Italy demands investigation into 'fake' sauces in supermarket by European Parliament

Italian Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida called for an urgent investigation after pasta sauces were found in the European Parliament supermarket that he believes imitate Italian names. The carbonara sauce, made with 'Italian pancetta', which does not correspond to the traditional ingredients, caused particular indignation, as in Italy it is made with guanciale. Lollobrigia believes that such products are misleading to consumers.

Sauces under the brand of the Belgian retail chain violate European regulations that prohibit misrepresentation of the actual origin of products. The Italian government has long been fighting against so-called "allegedly Italian" products that interfere with real Italian producers. Recently, it was announced that a permanent working group was set up at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to protect consumer rights and control tariffs.

This situation emphasizes the importance of protecting traditional foods and their identity in the context of globalization. Further actions on the part of the Italian government may include filing formal complaints within the EU, as well as strengthening national initiatives to protect Italian culinary traditions.
