Julle Madise will discuss her presidential candidacy with Estonian lawmakers

Estonian Chancellor of Justice Julle Madise, who has agreed to run for president, will meet with parliamentary groups in the Riigikogu on Monday. She will present her vision of the role of head of state to the lawmakers and answer their questions, according to ERR News.

The President of Estonia is elected by members of the Riigikogu. To be elected, a candidate must secure the support of at least 68 of the 101 members of parliament.

Madise is currently in the middle of her second seven-year term as Chancellor of Justice. Her nomination is supported by the parties of the ruling coalition—the Reform Party and Eesti 200—as well as the opposition Social Democratic Party.

Last week, these three political forces collected 62 signatures in support of Madise’s nomination as a presidential candidate. She needs just a few more votes to be elected.

According to the meeting schedule, Madise will meet with the Centrist Party faction at 10:00 a.m., with the largest opposition party, Isamaa, at noon, with the Social Democrats at 2:00 p.m., and with independent members of parliament at 3:00 p.m. At 1:30 p.m., she is also scheduled to meet separately with Reform Party MP Mart Virklaev, who, unlike his party colleagues, has not yet signed a petition in the Riigikogu in support of her nomination.
