Lawyer Ohene-Essel to run for NDC secretary in Ghana’s Bono Region
In Ghana, private legal practitioner Ohene-Essel Etur Kwasi has announced his intention to run for the position of regional secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bono Region. He intends to strengthen the party’s grassroots structures and work in the constituencies ahead of the 2028 general elections, MyJoyOnline reports.
Candidate’s goals
According to Ohene-Essel, his candidacy is driven by the desire to build a stronger and more cohesive party capable of retaining power after the 2028 elections. One of his objectives, he said, is to retain for the NDC all 11 parliamentary seats in the Bono Region and reclaim the Jaman South constituency, where the New Patriotic Party (NPP) won in the 2024 general elections.
The candidate also said he seeks to improve the NDC’s administrative and organisational structure. Under his plan, every constituency should be represented and party members should be informed about its work.

Experience and election schedule
Ohene-Essel has been a member of the Bono Regional Disciplinary Committee since 2021 and served as acting regional legal director in 2025. He was also secretary of the Bono legal team and led a group of 11 NDC lawyers who monitored the 2024 general elections in the Bono East Region.
He received legal education at Mountcrest University College and the Ghana School of Law, and also holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Catholic University.
The NDC plans to open nominations on 6 October 2026 and hold elections for regional executives on 14 and 15 November 2026. According to the outlet, the incumbent Bono regional secretary, Dennis Yeboah Twumasi, also known as Ayan Daud Twumasi, is unlikely to seek re-election because he serves as deputy chief executive officer of the National Health Insurance Authority. Party sources also reported at least two other possible contenders.
