Israel raises readiness for possible attack ahead of Rosh Hashanah — Jerusalem Post

In Israel, defense structures are maintaining the highest level of readiness ahead of Rosh Hashanah, which begins on Friday evening. The military assesses that an incident could occur on one of several active fronts, The Jerusalem Post reports.

According to the publication, Israel's National Security Council on Sunday urged Israelis abroad to take precautions, including drawing less attention to themselves while traveling. As of Sunday evening, there was no specific information about an imminent attack outside the country.

Surprise army drill

On Sunday, shortly before 5:00, the entire Israel Defense Forces was involved in the surprise “Alot Ha-Shahar 2.0” drill. Its purpose was to test readiness for a large-scale war on various fronts — from Lebanon and Syria through the eastern border and the West Bank to the Gaza Strip and the southern border.

IDF Chief of the General Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir said that the country is going through a tense and unstable period on all fronts and is preparing for the holidays. According to him, the main requirement for the entire army is readiness for a surprise attack.

Tensions on several fronts

The Jerusalem Post writes that Israeli security officials believe that Hezbollah, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and combat groups of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have motives and capabilities to conduct operations.

On the Syrian border, Israeli forces responded to three people approaching the border fence. The army assumed they may have been trying to plant explosives; an armed drone was launched at them. In Lebanon, the IDF completed clearing tunnels on the Ali al-Taher ridge.

During an operation in the village of Aqaba in the West Bank, the military found a rocket, an M16 rifle, and a significant quantity of explosives intended for making bombs. Earlier, five members of a cell were detained in the Qabatiya area; the Israeli military believed they were preparing a major attack in northern Samaria. The IDF also assesses that Hamas may try to carry out a high-profile attack from the Gaza Strip.
