Israel mocks Russia’s statements at the UN on peace and international law
Israel’s Foreign Minister, Gideon Saar, sharply responded to the address by Russia’s permanent representative during a United Nations Security Council meeting focused on the situation in the Middle East.
This was reported by The Moscow Times.
The Russian diplomat accused Israel of violating international law by registering land in the West Bank, calling it a “policy of creating irreversible facts on the ground.” In response, Gideon Saar said he found it amusing to hear such accusations from a country that itself occupies and annexes territories.
The Israeli minister admitted that he barely restrained his laughter during the speech, alluding to Russia’s prolonged full-scale aggression against Ukraine. Saar emphasised the absurdity of a situation in which a state that systematically ignores UN principles and the territorial integrity of its neighbours attempts to lecture others on peaceful conflict resolution. Saar’s diplomatic retort became one of the most discussed moments of the meeting, highlighting the level of distrust towards Russian diplomacy on the international stage.
During the same session, Russia also resorted to its usual rhetoric, calling reports of deliberate attacks on peaceful Ukrainian families “unsubstantiated claims” and denying any shelling of civilians, despite numerous documented instances of damage to residential and critical infrastructure. Russia’s stance at the UN continues to provoke outrage among the majority of the international community, once again underscoring the tense atmosphere during discussions of global security crises.
Earlier, Russia’s mouthpiece at the UN – its permanent representative to the Security Council, Vasily Nebenzya – issued another set of threats against Ukraine. He is currently demanding that Kyiv accept Moscow’s so-called “peace plan.”
