JTP AUTO plans to assemble electric vehicles in Tanzania — ECNS

Tanzanian automotive startup JTP AUTO is exploring cooperation with Chinese companies in the field of new energy vehicles to develop electric vehicle assembly and production in Tanzania. ECNS reports, citing the international media outlet China-Global South Project.

Plans for electric vehicle assembly

This year, JTP AUTO considered cooperation opportunities with several Chinese automakers. The company plans not only to import finished vehicles but also to establish electric vehicle assembly lines in the country.

For this purpose, the startup intends to use Chinese technologies and components while developing local technical expertise. The report does not name the Chinese automakers with which the company is exploring cooperation.

Market situation

According to the publication, Tanzania's new energy vehicle market lags behind the markets of other major East African countries. The factors cited include economic and political conditions, as well as population size and the scale of the domestic market.

Electric vehicle assembly facilities have already been established in several African countries, while Tanzania's local sector for manufacturing and assembling such vehicles is at an early stage of development. Potential cooperation could become a step for the country from importing electric vehicles to local assembly and production and provide experience in developing a supply chain.
