Karachi police say they uncovered methamphetamine supply network — Dawn

In Karachi, Pakistan, police said they had uncovered an international methamphetamine supply network and detained two of its alleged members, including a woman. According to law enforcement officials, 19.56 kilograms of methamphetamine, also known as crystal meth, were seized from the detainees. Dawn reports.

Detentions following an informant’s tip

Farrukh Ali, the deputy inspector general of police for Karachi’s East district, said that officers from the Landhi police district detained the suspects after receiving information from an informant. He claimed that they had maintained contacts with an Afghan drug trafficker, Sabir Afghan, whom police described as well-known.

Farrukh Ali said the detainees allegedly belonged to an Afghanistan-linked network of drug traffickers that supplied drugs to Karachi and other parts of Pakistan. According to the police version, methamphetamine was delivered from Afghanistan via various routes to Lahore and other areas of Punjab province, and from there distributed across the country, including to Karachi.

Police version of a family cartel

Law enforcement officials also claim that the network was a family cartel, whose key figure is a woman named Mehwish, who lives in Lahore. According to the official, she allegedly supplied high-quality methamphetamine from Afghanistan, while the detained woman is related to her by marriage.

Police say that the detained woman’s husband arranged drug supplies, while she distributed them among clients. One member of this cartel, according to Farrukh Ali, was recently detained by Pakistan’s Anti-Narcotics Force. The investigation is ongoing: police are trying to identify other possible members of the network and details of its activities.

Earlier this month, police also said they had seized a large shipment of methamphetamine and detained eight suspects during a raid on a warehouse in Karachi’s Mehran Town area.
