Kallas expects the EU to decide on 90 billion for Ukraine within the next 24 hours

The European Union expects a decision on €90 billion in financial aid for Ukraine to be adopted in the very near future. This was stated by EU High Representative Kaja Kallas following a meeting of the EU Council in Luxembourg. She also outlined plans for new sanctions and the resumption of negotiations.

A decision on a potential €90 billion loan from the European Union to Ukraine could be adopted within the next 24 hours. This was stated by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas during a press conference following the EU Council meeting in Luxembourg on April 21.

According to her, there is new political momentum within the European Union to adopt this decision, and negotiations have entered the final phase. “Following the elections in Hungary, there is new momentum, and I expect a positive decision on the 90-billion-euro loan within the next 24 hours,” Kallas stated.

She also reported that EU foreign ministers supported the need to move more quickly on a new, 20th package of sanctions against Russia. According to her, Europe must continue to support Ukraine so that it can hold its ground until Russia realizes the futility of the war. “We must continue to provide Ukraine with what it needs to hold its ground until Putin understands that this war is going nowhere,” she emphasized.

Kallas also stated the need to unblock a number of long-standing EU decisions, including opening negotiation clusters for Ukraine, working on the European Peace Facility’s arms fund, and intensifying sanctions pressure. “We must review long-blocked decisions, including opening negotiation clusters with Ukraine. Also, the European Peace Facility’s arms fund. Furthermore, we must review sanctions that were already on the table but had not been agreed upon earlier,” Kallas added.
