Callas warned of the danger posed by political forces that ignore the threat from Russia
Kaja Kallas warned of the danger posed by political forces that ignore or downplay the Russian threat to Europe. The EU’s top diplomat made the statement following the victory of “Alternative for Germany” in the Saxony-Anhalt state election.
After meeting with Lithuanian PrimeMindaugas Sinkevičius, warned that sabotage and other hybrid threats are encroaching on Europe at a time when political forces that ignore this threat are gaining popularity on the continent.
“At the same time, parties that, in a sense, do not see this threat and say that we should not do anything about it because it is not our business are strengthening their positions,” Kallas stated.
The diplomat expressed concern that this factor could affect Europe’s readiness to repel such hybrid attacks. At the same time, she acknowledged that the AfD’s victory in Germany’s state elections is an internal matter for the country.
“So I’m simply afraid that we might wake up to a situation where we haven’t done enough to avert threats and protect ourselves. However, of course, the Germans themselves, as a democratic nation, must make their own choice,” Kallas noted, according to BNS.
As a reminder, European countries have stepped up their search for interceptor missiles for the Patriot systems they plan to transfer to Ukraine. Kyiv is seeking to strengthen its missile defense ahead of a possible new wave of Russian attacks this winter.
Earlier, Finland explained why it would not transfer Patriot missiles to Ukraine.
