Lula campaign accuses Trump of trying to colonize Brazil — The Guardian
The election campaign of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has accused US President Donald Trump of seeking to colonize the country and gain control over its natural resources through possible interference in the presidential election. As The Guardian reports, these claims were made in a televised campaign ad by Lula’s team that aired on Thursday.
Statements by Lula’s team
The one-minute video claims that Trump is trying to influence the voting outcome in favor of Lula’s far-right rival, Flávio Bolsonaro. The ad’s narrator called Bolsonaro Trump’s candidate and said that the US president allegedly seeks to seize Brazil’s wealth and deprive it of its future.
Lula himself wrote on social media platform X that his opponent, according to him, wants to hand Brazil’s natural resources over to the United States. The president also said that under such a scenario, the country would become a colony again.

Elections and the US response
The first round of Brazil’s presidential election is scheduled for October 4. A second round is to take place on October 25 if none of the candidates receives more than half of the votes. According to the publication, Lula and Bolsonaro have close poll ratings.
The US State Department previously denied claims of interference in Brazil’s elections and called allegations of an attempt to undermine the electoral process of a democratic state unfounded. At the same time, concerns are being voiced in Brazil and beyond about Washington’s possible influence through diplomatic and economic pressure, including 25% tariffs on Brazilian imports.
Dozens of US lawmakers from the Democratic Party addressed Secretary of State Marco Rubio. In a letter, they expressed concern about what they called a multifaceted campaign of interference and destabilization in Brazil and asked the Trump administration to confirm its respect for Brazil’s electoral process.
