For the first time in 10 years, Canada will appoint a diplomat with no Ukrainian heritage as its ambassador to Ukraine
Diplomat Tamara Movgini will become Canada’s new ambassador to Ukraine. She will replace Nataliya Tsmots, whose diplomatic mission has come to an end. This will be the first time in the past 10 years that a diplomat without Ukrainian heritage has been appointed as Canada’s ambassador to Ukraine.
As noted, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced the confirmation of diplomat Tamara Movginn as ambassador to Ukraine.
Movginn’s appointment ends a decade-long tradition in which Canada was represented in Ukraine by diplomats of Ukrainian descent.
Since 2014, the position of ambassador has been held successively by Roman Vashchuk, Larisa Galadza, and Natalia Tsmots. All have Ukrainian roots.
Movgini has devoted most of her career to the Indo-Pacific region and international security issues.
Prior to her appointment to Ukraine, Movginn headed the Canadian Embassy in South Korea, held senior positions at Global Affairs Canada, and worked on issues of international security, foreign policy, and diplomatic relations.

As a reminder, the ambassadors of Canada and Switzerland are concluding their missions in Ukraine.
