In North Macedonia, more than 3,000 people were poisoned due to contamination of the water supply
In the town of Gostivar in northern North Macedonia, 3,150 cases of poisoning have been reported after contaminated water from an open canal entered the municipal water supply.
According to the investigation, due to negligence on the part of the management of the municipal utility “Komunalec,” water containing coliform bacteria—whose levels in the canal exceeded the norm by 48 times—entered the water supply system over a period of 22 days. The company’s director and two technical managers were taken into custody, and the use of tap water for drinking and cooking in the city was temporarily banned.
According to investigators, on June 25, they ordered three pumps to be installed in an open canal filled with water in order to check the pressure in the system. During an inspection on July 16, it was discovered that the pumps were still operating and that bacteria-contaminated water from the canal was entering the water supply system.
