Canada says it intends to maintain economic pressure on Iran
Canada said on September 7 that it would coordinate with international allies to impose new sanctions and maintain economic pressure on Iran. The joint statement was made by Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, Anadolu Agency reports.
Statement by Canadian ministers
Anand and Champagne called on Tehran to immediately cease activities they described as destabilizing in the Middle East. Canadian officials accused Iran of persistent threats to vessels attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, illegal nuclear activities, and support for regional proxy groups.
The ministers also said that Ottawa was working closely with G7 partners, supporting efforts by the United States, France, and the United Kingdom to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Sanctions and further steps
The statement reaffirmed support for Operation Economic Outcast — a US-led maximum-pressure sanctions campaign — and other measures aimed at limiting Iran's ability to finance terrorist activities.
According to the Canadian ministers, since 2010 the country has imposed sanctions on 492 Iranian individuals and entities under the Special Economic Measures Act and the Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act. They added that Canada would seek additional steps with international partners to force Iran to stop behavior that the Canadian side described as malicious. Iran did not immediately respond to these accusations.
