Lithuania's prime ministerial candidate has proposed constitutional amendments regarding nuclear weapons and foreign military bases
Mindaugas Sinkevičius, a candidate for the office of Prime Minister of Lithuania, stated that the country should reconsider the constitutional provision prohibiting the deployment of weapons of mass destruction and foreign military bases.
According to the politician, it would be advisable to either amend or completely remove the relevant article from the Lithuanian Constitution.
Sinkevičius noted that the constitutions of some neighboring countries do not contain such provisions, so, in his opinion, it would be better not to enshrine such restrictions in the Constitution.
“It seems to me that it would be more politically correct to simply remove this article… It’s hardly worth trying to come up with a new wording,” he said.
The politician emphasized that before making any decisions, it is necessary to take into account the position of law enforcement agencies and assess the possible consequences.
“We need to assess all the consequences… the State Security Department and other agencies should assist us,” added Sinkevičius.
He also acknowledged that any changes in this area could provoke a political reaction, but hopes that it will be “appropriate.”
