Estonian Minister of Justice Julle Madise will run for president

Estonian Chancellor of Justice Julle Madise has officially announced her intention to run for the country’s presidency. The election of the head of state by parliament is scheduled for September 2026.

On the morning of August 17, Madise announced her decision to run

She noted that the presidency entails the highest level of responsibility toward the state.

In the coming days, Madise plans to meet with members of parliament to present her vision for the presidential role.

Representatives of the Reform Party, “Estonia 200,” and the Social Democrats are already prepared to support Madise’s candidacy. Earlier reports indicated support from 62 members of parliament.

At the same time, 21 signatures from members of parliament are sufficient for an official nomination, while at least 68 votes are required to win in the first round of the parliamentary election. If the Riigikogu is unable to elect a president, the election will proceed to the electoral college.

One of Madise’s potential rivals is said to be Tiit Land, rector of Tallinn University of Technology. “Isamaa” and the Center Party may back him, though they have yet to make a final decision on their candidate.

This was reported by ERR.
