The Pärnu City Council passed a vote of no confidence in the mayor and elected a new mayor

At a meeting on Monday, the City Council of Pärnu, Estonia, passed a vote of no confidence in Mayor Kristel Voltenberg and elected Siima Suursild of the Isamaa party as the city’s new mayor. Twenty-three of the 39 council members voted in favor of the no-confidence motion, according to ERR News.

At the beginning of the session, Voltenberg announced that she would resign, but the council proceeded to consider and approve the no-confidence motion nonetheless. She also submitted a request to have her term as a city council member reinstated.

According to Voltenberg, she served in office for 253 days. She told council members that during this time she had given Pärnu and its residents everything she could, and she also expressed her wish for the procedure and her resignation to proceed with dignity.

City Council Chair Andriy Korobeinik of the Centrist Party noted that the last time the mayor of Pärnu faced a no-confidence vote was more than 20 years ago. According to the coalition agreement, the mayor’s office belongs to Isamaa, while the City Council chairmanship remains with the Centrist Party. The third coalition partner is EKRE.
