Kazakhstan has refused to comply with the court ruling in the case involving Gazprom and Naftogaz

Kazakhstan’s Minister of Justice, Erlan Sarsembayev, stated that the ruling by the Astana International Financial Center court ordering Russian company Gazprom to pay $1.4 billion to Ukraine’s Naftogaz will not be enforced within the country.

This concerns a dispute between Naftogaz and Gazprom over the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory, according to the publication Zakon.kz.

Previously, the court of the Astana International Financial Center, which operates under British law, authorized the enforcement of the arbitration award in Kazakhstan. This opened the door to collecting over $1.4 billion from the Russian company.

However, the head of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Justice stated that this decision will have no practical application.

“The dispute is not related to Kazakhstan’s jurisdiction, Sarsembayev explained.

According to the minister, the decision was made without the participation of the Russian side, and the process itself is not yet final.

He also emphasized that filing a lawsuit does not automatically imply recognition of the court’s jurisdiction in a specific case.

The dispute arose over a 2019 contract for the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine.

After transit through the Sokhranovka gas metering station was halted in 2022, the Ukrainian side filed a claim for compensation for losses.

In March 2026, Naftogaz of Ukraine Group finally won the arbitration dispute against Gazprom for over $1.4 billion.

At that time, the Swiss Federal Supreme Court rejected the Russian company’s appeal and upheld the arbitration award issued back in June 2025.

The Astana International Financial Centre Court authorized the enforcement of approximately $1.4 billion against the Russian company Gazprom in favor of Naftogaz of Ukraine. The decision recognizes the arbitration award and allows for its enforcement within Kazakhstan.

Gazprom-Media has invested hundreds of millions in a platform to search for “undesirable” content in videos.

As a reminder, in 2025, mobile internet was shut down over 11,000 times in Russia.

Additionally, sanctions, the loss of foreign markets, and the deterioration of the global economic situation have exposed the structural weakness of Russia’s regional budgets.
