Keiko Fujimori became Peru's first elected female president
Keiko Fujimori has been elected president of Peru—she is the first woman to hold this office in the country. According to Al Jazeera English, Fujimori won after four attempts over the course of 15 years.
She narrowly defeated a left-wing candidate and will lead a country that Al Jazeera describes as divided. The publication also calls her victory yet another example of a shift toward the right in Latin American politics.
