Patchbay Band leader questions Ghana’s music industry structure
Patchbay Band leader and manager Philip Akwa has questioned the structure of Ghana’s music industry. He said that existing institutions do not fully take into account the needs and specifics of how live bands operate, MyJoyOnline reports.
The role of industry organizations
According to Akwa, the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) and the Ministry of Tourism play a role in the creative and music sectors. At the same time, he believes that their activities are limited to certain areas and do not cover the challenges faced by groups such as Patchbay Band.
The manager also said that TGMA and other organizations are private. That is why he raised the question of whether there is a music industry in the country that properly recognizes the contribution of live bands.

Patchbay Band’s experience
Speaking on the E Vibes program on Joy Prime, Akwa said that Patchbay Band has been operating since 2011 and has consistently made its presence known on stage. In particular, the band has performed alongside well-known musicians, including Akwaboah Snr.
In the band leader’s view, the group’s long-standing presence should be reflected in the level of recognition and support it receives in the music community. The issue he raised concerns the visibility, representation and access of live bands to opportunities in Ghana’s music sector.
