Christodoulides and Jordan’s king discuss ties with the EU — Cyprus Mail
Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides met with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in New York, United States, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. They discussed prospects for closer relations between Jordan and the European Union.
Support for relations with the EU
As Cyprus Mail reports, Cypriot government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said that the meeting paid particular attention to Cyprus’s consistent support for strengthening relations between the EU and Jordan.
According to him, Christodoulides mentioned the strategic and comprehensive partnership launched in 2025. The spokesperson noted that Cyprus had actively supported this initiative, which lays the groundwork for further deepening cooperation. Letymbiotis also said that the Cypriot government invited Jordan to be represented on the sidelines of the informal European Council summit held in Nicosia in April.
Bilateral and regional cooperation
Letymbiotis said that the leaders reaffirmed their shared readiness to deepen bilateral cooperation in areas of common interest and mutual benefit. Christodoulides also thanked King Abdullah II for providing Cyprus with two firefighting aircraft along with their crews this summer.

The spokesperson described cooperation in civil protection, particularly the development of Cyprus’s regional aerial firefighting station, as one of the most notable examples of the dynamics of bilateral relations. The leaders also reviewed the state of trilateral cooperation between Cyprus, Greece and Jordan following the May summit in Amman attended by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
In addition, they discussed the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor. According to Letymbiotis, this project could help strengthen regional connectivity and resilience.
Christodoulides also informed the Jordanian monarch about the latest developments regarding the Cyprus issue and efforts to resume substantive negotiations on the basis of the agreed framework and relevant UN Security Council resolutions. The President of Cyprus thanked Jordan for its long-standing and consistent position on this issue.
