Estonian Interior Ministry Secretary General Miilits: Russia does not intend to attack NATO — ERR News

Secretary General of Estonia’s Ministry of the Interior Tarmo Miilits stated that there are currently no signs that the Russian Federation — an aggressor state — intends to carry out a military attack on any NATO country. He wrote this in a column for ERR News.

According to Miilits, aggressive Russia poses a long-term strategic threat to Europe. At the same time, he said, the available information does not confirm claims that Moscow intends to attack an Alliance state in this region.

The official referred to an assessment by Estonia’s foreign intelligence service and allies: Russia currently has no intention of militarily attacking any NATO member state. He urged people not to give in to panic, which, in his view, is being amplified by certain think tanks and former intelligence chiefs.

Miilits noted that scenarios involving a limited Russian attack on Estonia to test the implementation of NATO’s Article 5 often fail to take into account Estonia’s own defense capabilities and its membership in the Alliance.

Risks of sabotage and pressure

At the same time, Miilits said that Moscow, in his view, continues to seek to destabilize Europe, intimidate its countries, and pressure them into abandoning support for Ukraine. He pointed to acts of sabotage in which, he said, the trace of Russian intelligence services is becoming increasingly visible.

As an example, the official cited an attempted drone attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport. According to him, Germany unequivocally placed responsibility for this incident on Russia. Miilits also stressed cooperation among European law enforcement and security agencies and said that Estonia has already demonstrated its ability to identify saboteurs, while courts are considering their actions and intentions.
